Law is a system of rules, usually enforced through a set of institutions. Laws can shape or reflect politics, economics and society in numerous ways and serves as a primary social mediator of relations between people. Contract law regulates everything from buying a bus ticket to trading on derivatives markets. Property law defines rights and obligations related to the transfer and title of personal (often referred to as chattel) and real property. Trust law applies to assets held for investment and financial security, while tort law allows claims for compensation if a person's rights or property are harmed. If the harm is criminalized in a statute, criminal law offers means by which the state can prosecute the perpetrator. Constitutional law provides a framework for the creation of law, the protection of human rights and the election of political representatives. Administrative law is used to review the decisions of government agencies, while international law governs affairs between sovereign nation states in activities ranging from trade to environmental regulation or military action. Writing in 350 BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle declared, "The rule of law is better than the rule of any individual."

Legal systems elaborate rights and responsibilities in a variety of ways. A general distinction can be made between civil law jurisdictions, which codify their laws, and common law systems, where judge made law is not consolidated. In some countries, religion informs the law. Law provides a rich source of scholarly inquiry, into legal history, philosophy, economic analysis or sociology. Law also raises important and complex issues concerning equality, fairness and justice. "In its majestic equality", said the author Anatole France in 1894, "the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread." In a typical democracy, the central institutions for interpreting and creating law are the three main branches of government, namely an impartial judiciary, a democratic legislature, and an accountable executive. To implement and enforce the law and provide services to the public, a government's bureaucracy, the military and police are vital. While all these organs of the state are creatures created and bound by law, an independent legal profession and a vibrant civil society inform and support their progress.

What exactly is the law that states a business has to give you an application?
Q. I hear from a lot of people that if you go to a business and ask for an application and they refuse that that's against the law. By Law they have to give you an application whether they're hiring or not and they have to keep it on file for 6 months. I'd like to see the exact law that states that. I tried looking on the California employment and regulations site, but it's a real mess and hard to find anything in there. I'm hoping someone here can state the exact law.

A. Their is no such law. The only law that is close to what your saying is that you have a right to go to a business and ask for a applications if they are hiring. They can't say oh no we can't give you it cuz your not our type. Or flat out no. Even if lets say your a highschool student and applying for a engineering job. Even though the highschool kid has no college degrees in engineering the business can't refuse to give him an application for the job. By law you can't refuse someone even unqualified to apply for a open job at a business. It is called the equal employment opportunity act. I am not sure if it's a state statue or a federal one. That is the only law their is... what your hearing is wrong. If a business is not looking… [cont.]

What law profession provides the most pay with a resonable amount of off time?
Q. I hear lawyers make great money but that it is often followed with 90 hour work weeks. I understand that right out of law school one will have to work long hours, but with a few years under your belt and a good working knowledge of your field which area of law gives the best pay with the reasonable hours? Also what areas of alw have the best job outlook?

A. I have one of the "biglaw" jobs that EvilOrange mentioned, with a $160k/yr. start, so I can speak to that. Lawyers can make great money, especially if you work in biglaw which basically means the top 100 law firms or so, most of which have starting salaries of $160k because they match each other competitively. I think 90 hours a week is an exaggeration. There will certainly be SOME weeks in which you work 90+ hours (when you have a case going to trial next week, or you have a big deal closing that week), but the average is probably more like 60~65 hours per week depending on your firm. (Which means there will also be some 40-45 hour weeks that bring down the average, but the problem is that you can't really control when those weeks occur.… [cont.]

What is the law for illinois motorcycles?
Q. I know there was a law you cant drive a motorcycle more than 250cc unless youre 18 or take a class. Is that the law still? I really just want to get this class done so i can ride next year. But i accidentally signed for the wrong class and cant get ahold of anyone to help me. Can anyone give me a phone number to help me out or anything?
Asked by Jake M - Sun Apr 19 20:28:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In Illinois, you need a 'L' endorsement to ride a motor-driven cycle that has less than a 150cc engine. You need a 'M' endorsement to ride a motorcycle that has greater than a 150cc engine. However, in Illinois, if you are over 18, if you pass the MSF BasicRider course, you can get the 'M' endorsement without having to take a written or riding test. If you're under 18, you need to take the BasicRider course and take the riding test.
